At the Rocket Community Fund, our mission to support inclusive, thriving and resilient communities is driven by dedicated team members and leaders who are truly passionate about the work. Their dedication drives the creation of new partnerships, initiatives and programming that help strengthen our communities.
Recently, two people on the Rocket Community Fund team were honored for their achievements and influence: Jasmin DeForrest, Director of Community Sponsorships, and Myka Burley, Program Manager for Education and Employment. Read on to learn more.
Jasmin DeForrest – 2021 Michigan Chronicle Women of Excellence Honoree
For more than a decade, the Michigan Chronicle has celebrated local African American women who inspire others through vision and leadership, exceptional achievements, and participation in community service. This year’s Women of Excellence have shown exceptional success in business, community involvement, and philanthropy. Jasmin joins an elite group of honorees this year, which also includes Trina Scott, Chief Diversity Officer for Rocket Companies.

DeForrest leads community sponsorships at the Rocket Community Fund, which supports inclusive events and programming that sparks connections between people, place and culture while also bolstering the economic growth of Detroit. DeForrest created the popular Detroit Out Loud summer festival, which she transformed into a hybrid event in 2020 due to the pandemic. She is continually seeking out new and creative ways to support our communities, like her work with CultureSource to conceptualize the Digital Access for the Arts Program (DAAP) which provides digital resources and workshops to support arts and cultural organizations as they navigate this new reality.
“Being recognized as part of the Michigan Chronicles’ ‘Women of Excellence’ is an honor because it represents the voices of the people, particularly those from the Black community. I’m excited to receive this award, and remain committed to arts and culture. My goal is to continue supporting more cultural awareness, inclusivity and access to creative pathways in our city. Working for the Rocket Community Fund has given me the opportunity to impact this sector in Detroit – the city I was born, raised, and live in – l and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
Myka Burley – 2021 MichBusiness Shooting Star Honoree
Since 1996, MichBusiness has been honoring women workplace leaders who make significant contributions to their fields and the community. There awards are bestowed at the annual Women Thrive Conference, which takes place this year May 10-14. Burley was honored with a Shooting Star award, which recognizes young women on the move. A relative newcomer to the team, Burley joined Rocket Community Fund in the fall of 2020 and has been driving our digital inclusion and equity strategy in education. She has played an important role in supporting Connect 313, Detroit’s citywide digital inclusion strategy that aims to bridge the digital divide in Detroit through community led and driven investments and collaboration.

“I’m both thankful and elated to receive this honor,” Burley said. “To be recognized alongside such a dynamic group of trailblazers and leaders is humbling, to say the least. As an advocate for economic equity through education and entrepreneurship, I wholly believe that the socioeconomic status that one was born into doesn’t have to be the status that they carry through life. I believe bringing forth this mission is my life’s purpose; serving at the Rocket Community Fund has been pivotal in living out this purpose comprehensively.”
We are very proud of both Jasmin and Myka and are looking forward to seeing what they’ll do next!
