Digital Access isn’t simply a “nice-to-have” privilege anymore – it has become a critical resource to advance in the world today. Nearly every aspect of our lives requires some degree of digital connectivity, from education and employment to healthcare. But as we are painfully aware, far too many Americans are negatively impacted by the “digital divide,” a lack of access and training to digital resources needed in order to thrive.
That’s why we partner with organizations who are equally dedicated to bridging the digital divide, like Human I-T, a nonprofit that tackles the issue by refurbishing and refreshing donated devices and distributing them to underserved communities through targeted programs. They also resell refurbished devices and use the proceeds to purchase new devices for people in the community. Human I-T’s approach also has positive environmental impact, as the donation of devices reduces e-waste and helps support a greener planet.
Since 2020, Rocket Companies has been the largest donor of e-waste to Human I-T in Detroit. Each quarter, we donate hundreds of digital devices to Human I-T, which keeps dangerous e-waste out of landfills and puts refurbished devices into the hands of residents who need them. Through our partnership, Human-I-T picks up around 40 pallets of e-waste from our Detroit offices every quarter, and we work with them to schedule pickups in our other office locations. You can check out the impact we made in 2022 in the graphic below.
And here’s a closer look at how much we were able to do together to reduce e-waste and bridge the digital divide in just the last quarter of 2022!
Our partnership with Human I-T has grown rapidly over the past two years as we’ve expanded our commitment to ending the digital divide in Detroit. In 2020, the Rocket Community Fund provided support for Human I-T to open their first warehouse in the city, where the donated digital devices are refurbished and shipped out to the local community. Soon, Detroit residents will be able to access devices, low-cost high-speed internet, digital literacy training and other resources at a brick-and-mortar storefront – the first of its kind in the country.
We’re excited to continue supporting this partnership towards our shared goal of digital inclusion, and to help create a greener, cleaner planet for all.
