DETROIT, Mich. (June 12, 2023) – Recognizing that digital access for everyone is essential to a promising future, Human-I-T is proud to announce the opening of the nation’s first digital equity store, Human I-T on Seven Mile, located at 6375 W. 7 Mile Road in Detroit.
The store is the first of its kind to open anywhere in the United States and one of Detroit’s only local electronics stores.
The affordable electronics retailer along the city’s historic Avenue of Fashion will advance Human I-T’s ongoing mission of delivering access to affordable technology, low-cost internet, digital skills training, and tech support for communities on the wrong side of the digital divide. The store is made possible thanks to generous support from General Motors and the Rocket Community Fund.
A grand opening will take place Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at 4pm with a ribbon cutting ceremony and speakers from Human I-T, the office of Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, General Motors, and Rocket Community Fund. The event will include a tour of the retail and community space, and a demonstration of the new and refurbished electronics products that will be available for purchase.
“The opening of Human I-T on Seven Mile, a retail store and community space, is a significant step toward shrinking the digital divide and creating equitable access to opportunity in Detroit,” said Gabe Middleton, CEO of Human I-T. “We believe access to technology and the internet is a right, not a privilege. Everyone deserves a fair shot at success, regardless of their income or zip code. We are thrilled to provide products and services directly to the community with neighborhood-based, personalized assistance.”
The new 2,800+ square foot store will operate Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All customers will have access to low-cost digital resources and qualifying customers are eligible for discounts on laptops and home internet service. The store will provide digital navigation assistance for everyone from students to seniors and low-income households. Specially trained Digital Navigators will help customers learn about available technology, purchase laptops and computers, enroll in free or low-cost internet plans, learn new digital skills, and receive onsite technical support.
In 2020, the Rocket Community Fund and General Motors provided significant support for Human I-T to open its first warehouse in Detroit. The commitment to Human I-T on Seven Mile from these two companies builds on their existing support, as well as the broader efforts to ensure every Detroit resident is connected with the digital tools, connectivity and literacy training they need and deserve.
“Today marks a significant milestone in Detroit’s journey towards digital equity,” said Laura Grannemann, Executive Director of the Rocket Community Fund. “Our goal is to empower Detroiters with essential tools to bridge the digital divide and create pathways for education, employment, and social connection. This retail space is the physical manifestation of those goals, combining accessible devices, digital literacy training and social connection in one place.”
“We’re extremely proud to support and celebrate the opening of Human I-T on Seven Mile,” said Terry Rhadigan, Vice President of Corporate Giving at General Motors. “Since coming to Detroit just three years ago, Human I-T’s work has supported thousands of students and families. Now, through this store, Human I-T is truly opening its doors to the community to provide residents with the tools they need to succeed – in school, work and life.”
In Detroit, approximately 200,000 residents, many of them school-aged children, do not have internet access, a digital device that is not a mobile phone, or the skills needed to effectively leverage the benefits of today’s digital world. Human I-T on Seven Mile will provide learning opportunities, connect customers to resources, and serve as a community hub that helps people get and stay connected.
