Meet Kenyetta “Kitty” Yarbrough, a Program Manager on our Housing Stability team who is dedicated to helping us move the needle on stabilizing housing in Detroit. Kitty is passionate about supporting residents with the resources and information they need to apply for the Homeowners Property Tax Exemption Program (HOPE), and thanks in part to her efforts we have had a record number of HOPE applicants this year. In this interview, Kitty talks about her passion for the work – and Rattlesnake pasta.
Rocket Community Fund: Why is it important to focus on housing as a foundational investment?
Kenyetta Yarbrough: We focus on housing investments first because we know when you have stable, reliable, sustainable housing, it makes everything else easier. You are better able to withstand the daily pressures of life. Just knowing that you have a home to go to makes the other challenges seem less stressful and more manageable. That’s why the Rocket Community Fund focuses on programs that will assist in creating access to and maintaining a healthy, happy, safe home, because that’s the foundation – everything else is secondary.
RCF: You previously worked for the Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation, How did this role with this organization inform your current work?
KY: I worked as a Community Engagement Manager for GRDC. I loved, loved, loved this role! It was my first job in the nonprofit space. I started as an intern while completing my Graduate Degree at Wayne State University’s School of Social Work. It was an opportunity to serve a community in the city of Detroit. As a part of my job duties, I was responsible for assisting homeowners with the Homeowners Property Tax Exemption Program (HOPE). We were funded by Rocket Community Fund at the time. Once I heard about the opening as a Housing Stability Program Manager at the Rocket Community Fund, the rest is history….or HER-story.
RCF: A big initiative for our housing stability team is promoting and informing residents about applying for HOPE (Homeowners Property Tax Exemption). You’ve been spearheading this initiative on our team. Why is HOPE so important, and how has this work helped residents?
KY: This work is most important because the HOPE program provides a stable environment for children and families as well as an opportunity to create generational wealth. Once a homeowner qualifies for HOPE, the door opens for them to receive other wraparound services like home repair, utility assistance and more. It’s the missing link we need to help create a more sustainable future for residents in our communities! This work has truly helped residents avoid the sting of foreclosure and displacement. Detroiters are seeing and believing that the program actually works!
RCF: What has been the most rewarding part of your job on the Rocket Community Fund?
KY: For me, I live to hear the testimonials of how the HOPE program helped to save someone’s family home. And to see the smiles on Detroiters faces because they loved their city enough to stay here and tough it out! I am always so inspired by the resilience of the people of my hometown.
RCF: We hear you’re a foodie and you watch all the cooking shows. Why? What’s your favorite dish to make/eat?
KY: First of all, I’m often told I’m a great cook. I love watching all the chefs and food experts talk about the different ingredients and dishes and learning new recipes to try on my family. Watching my family’s positive reactions is the main reason I stay updated on cooking trends – they seem to love everything I try! It also drives me to strive for new recipes and experiment. I’m always trying to outdo myself. My favorite dishes to eat are Asian. Thai food wins hands down. My favorite dish to prepare is what I call Rattlesnake Pasta! It’s my son’s favorite too.
