Meet Rumana Rahman: Rocket Central Senior Design Researcher, plant-loving master gardener, and a super volunteer who has lived in three different countries and speaks multiple languages. Rumana is passionate about championing the causes she cares about each year for the Rocket Companies Community Challenge, our annual crowdfunding campaign supporting nonprofits across the country. Rumana has also had the unique distinction of being both a “Champion” for the Community Challenge and a “Challenger” as her nonprofit community garden is participating in the Community Challenge for the second year in a row.
Planting Roots and Seeding Ideas
In partnership with Community Development Corporation (CDC) One New Humanity, Rumana launched her community garden, Sylhet Farms, in Hamtramck last year. Sylhet Farms received a grant from One New Humanity to build infrastructure and capacity.
“I started this garden with a vision of creating a space in my community where residents can thrive and grow their own food,” she said, “but equally important was my goal of cultural collaboration. I wanted to create a space where residents who might not normally interact are able to connect to each other in the most diverse city in Michigan.” To bring the garden to life, Rumana worked with One New Humanity founder Daniel Schnieder, and Akr Rahman, who leads the local mosque that provided the land. Volunteers from Rocket Companies and other organizations soon stepped in, and Rumana used her skills as a design researcher to conduct a competitive analysis and gain input from other urban gardeners.
A little over a month after Sylhet Farms was born, the nomination period for the 2022 Rocket Companies Community Challenge opened, and Rumana saw a unique opportunity to help her garden expand, including the creation of accessible plots for residents with disabilities. Once accepted, Rumana found herself in the unique position of being both Champion and Challenger in the Community Challenge!
Bumper Crop of Support and Awareness
The impact of the Community Challenge on Rumana’s fledging nonprofit was invaluable, as Rumana’s teammates were eager to support her cause. Sylhet Farms even won a bonus challenge, where participating nonprofits compete to win extra cash prizes from the Rocket Community Fund. The nonprofit took the top $1000 prize for a weekly bonus challenge focused on grassroots marketing, thanks to the Rumana’s video highlighting the goals of her fundraising campaign. The video not only helped her audience understand the tangible impact of their donations, it spread awareness – and that awareness caught like wildfire.
“We received such a positive response that I have been able to organize a few Rocket Companies volunteer events at Sylhet Farms both this year and last year,” she said. Her teammates have also gotten involved, using their professional skills to help drive awareness through skilled volunteering. Steve McMahon, a Sr UX Designer and Natasha Pietruschka, a UX Writer volunteered to create signs outside the garden with QR codes where visitors to the garden can learn more about Sylhet Farms.
Community Challenge Impact Continues to Blossom
Since launch, Sylhet Farms has 71 active gardeners and 114 plots. They have also expanded to include a farmer’s market, a youth intern plan and more. Sylhet Farms has also worked with other nonprofits like Keep Growing Detroit to cohost art classes in the garden. Rumana hopes this work can continue.
Sylhet Farms is participating again in the Community Challenge this year. Rumana says any funds raised will go towards creating more raised beds, increasing the number of accessible beds for those with physical challenges, support infrastructure and grow capacity. For her part, Rumana is so grateful to team members. “Their support has inspired and energized me to continue the work. Through the Community Challenge, I’ve also gotten to meet other team members who are passionate about serving the diverse needs of our community, and their passion is contagious!
