In this edition of 5 Questions, we get to know Marvin Logan, our new Director of Education and Employment. Marvin has extensive experience in leadership roles at youth-centered nonprofit organizations in the Midwest, and is looking forward to bringing his passion and expertise to the Rocket Community Fund team. In this post, Marvin draws on his background while reflecting on the challenges facing Detroit, and how he hopes to scale career opportunities and economic development through collaboration and community engagement.
Rocket Community Fund: What are you most excited about in your new role on the team?
Marvin Logan: I’m most excited to provide communities with relationships and resources that will transform barriers into stepping stones towards empowerment. Rocket is at the forefront of incredibly innovative philanthropy. So I’m excited to bring my best to contribute.
RCF: You have extensive experience leading youth-centered educational initiatives. What led you to this work?
ML: When I was 13, Deryck Toles and Inspiring Minds intercepted me when I was heading down a different path. The organization gave me an opportunity to attend a youth leadership seminar in Milwaukee, WI where I met Shawn Wilson, and Gavin McGuire with Usher’s New Look. Meeting three young Black men dedicating their lives to making a difference in the community had a profound impact on me. That’s when I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to philanthropic efforts that would ultimately help communities remove barriers – the same barriers that I was able to overcome, which allowed me to become the leader I am today.
RCF: Your most recent position was in Ohio. How do the challenges facing Detroiters with regards to education and employment compare?
ML: Many issues facing Midwesterners stem from the same similar systemic issues such as population shift, corporate flight, divestment, and disenfranchisement. However, the specific challenges facing Detroiters have been shaped by this city’s unique history and context. Detroit has been fighting against decades of economic decline, urban decay and disinvestment, which have led to critical disparities in educational outcomes, workforce development, and economic mobility. The city has been successful in overcoming some of obstacles, which has created an environment ripe with opportunity for natives and newcomers alike. But our work is far from over.
Continuing to address these challenges to provide opportunity for Detroiters – especially from marginalized communities – requires tailored solutions that acknowledge the Detroit’s unique circumstances while leveraging lessons learned from other cities within the region that have faced similar issues. The Rocket Community Fund is already doing the work; we need to continue examining opportunities to identify solutions that we create together with community involvement. That way, we can develop more strategies to promote educational attainment, expand economic opportunities, and foster inclusive growth for all Detroiters.
RCF: What, in your opinion, is the biggest are for opportunity with regards to workforce development and career education (either in Detroit, or nationally)?
ML: Detroit can become a hub of innovation for all things tech talent in the Midwest. We have an incredible network of gamechangers brewing to create something unique that shifts the landscape for what we think is possible. And we have the opportunity to cascade that success across Rocket Companies. Opening doors will shatter the barriers between marginalized communities and will help build the tech ecosystem that is solving some of the world’s most complex issues.
RCF: We hear you used to run track in college! How has your training and experience on the field prepared/influenced your career?
ML: ALL DAWGS EAT! Training and competing against the best athletes in the world has given me a work ethic and perspective that has served me well throughout my career. I love to get after and keep chopping away at a goal then get back in action for the next one. The goals break before I do, so I can always reach higher and higher as long as I put in the work. I’m looking forward to bringing my competitive edge to our team!
