“When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature. If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young.” – Maya Angelou
“Some books leave us free and some books make us free.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
March was National Reading Month, and for the third year in a row we kicked off this celebration of books with our signature Virtual Book Drive.
The annual book drive runs for nearly two weeks and benefits literacy-focused nonprofits in our home cities, the majority of which are United Way affiliates and their grantee partners. What make the fundraiser unique is that it is 100% virtual – Rocket Companies team members can shop for and donate books requested by the participating nonprofits in any market they choose. And in 2024, for the first time ever, our Canadian team members were able to participate as well. In addition, throughout March Volunteer Engagement and Giving team offers a variety of related volunteer opportunities focused on literacy and reading empowerment.
Impact of Book Drive Supports Communities, Empowers Team Members
The fundraiser was created in 2022 by Denine Ngoyi, Program Manager for Team Member Giving, to tie threads between the needs of our communities and the advocacy of our team members. The book drive serves as a platform for team members to support literacy efforts more directly in underserved communities, and the virtual component makes it easier for everyone to participate. “By partnering with these communities, we’re working to bridge the literacy gap and empower children and students who may face barriers to accessing educational materials,” she said.
Since 2022, Rocket Companies team members have donated 3,166 new books through the fundraiser, which is worth about $28,177! But as Denine explained, it isn’t just the fundraiser itself that provides value. “The book drive supports local communities by not only providing access to books but also by fostering a sense of community engagement and collaboration,” she said. “Through partnerships with local organizations, schools, and libraries, the initiative creates a network of support that extends beyond just the distribution of books, offering programs and events that promote literacy and educational opportunities tailored to the specific needs of each community.”
The Virtual Book Drive is open exclusively to Rocket Companies team members and leaders, who remain our most passionate and dedicated community advocates. “Our team members have demonstrated their commitment to National Reading Month by actively participating in donating books, promoting their efforts on social media, and volunteering their time to support literacy initiatives” Denine said. “Their dedication has made a significant impact on spreading the joy of reading.”
