This video is the first in our Rocket Community Fund Explains series, where we highlight the programs and investments that support our mission to ensure every American has access to safe and stable housing and new opportunities to advance and build a stable financial future.
It’s our flagship door-to-door canvassing program, which has served as the foundation for many of our housing stability programs. We’re talking, of course, about Neighbor to Neighbor, the initiative we started in 2017 to prevent displacement due to property tax foreclosure in Detroit. Neighbor to Neighbor was created to support two goals: 1. Collect data from residents living in properties at risk of tax foreclosure to better understand their needs, and 2. Provide these households at risk of displacement with information about housing support services to ensure residents can remain in their homes.
But what is Neighbor to Neighbor and why is it so important? In this stop-motion video, our Graphic Designer, Betsy Cooper (a previous member of our Housing Team who has a master’s degree in Urban Planning!) and our Video Content Creator, Cartiear Madlock, highlight the nuts and bolts of the program and how Neighbor to Neighbor solves for complex housing issues to prevent displacement and ensure that every American has access to safe and stable housing.
The Neighbor to Neighbor program has evolved over time to include more households, provide more resources, and inform our larger housing stability strategy. The success of the program in Detroit in helping to reduce property tax foreclosure has enabled us to scale the program into other cities, including Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Atlanta. It has paved the way for many of our other programs and investments, Make It Home – which we’ve been able to expand into additional cities – and other programs, including those supporting eviction defense.
The findings from Neighbor to Neighbor also played an important role in our $500M joint philanthropic commitment to the city of Detroit, by informing the Gilbert Family Foundation’s housing stability programs like the Detroit Tax Relief Fund and the Detroit Home Repair Fund. Neighbor to Neighbor is so critical to our housing stability approach, because it’s informed by the communities we serve. “We always take a resident-centered approach to our housing stability interventions,” affirmed Laura Grannemann, Executive Director of the Rocket Community Fund. “Those who experience issues like property tax delinquency are the best suited to help us understand and shape solutions. Alongside our Neighbor to Neighbor partners, we are proud to physically meet residents where they are in order to learn from their experience and connect them to the right resources.”
