Since 2019, Rocket Community has partnered with Grow Detroit’s Young Talent (GDYT) and Wayne State University for the Tech On-Ramps program, which supports Detroit youth with meaningful summer employment, internships, and job readiness training. Our partnership has evolved over time with an increased emphasis on in-demand jobs in tech, as well as career readiness, skill building and workforce development for the careers of the future.
At a recent event held in partnership with Wayne State University, we decided to focus on the importance of Generative AI tools. The event, which was modeled after similar tech-focused events led by Rocket Community Fund , included GDYT Detroit Public School Community District (DPSCD) high school students and the WSU honor students who served as mentors throughout the program.
The Generative AI session was both a celebration of the partnership and a platform for learning. “This event culminated from a unique partnership between higher education institutions, local employers and a citywide initiative that focuses on incubating local talent through GDYT,” said Jonathan Pulley, Senior Program Manager for Career Education on our Education and Employment team.
“To diversity our workforce, we must invest in the future,” Pulley continued. “We know that the more exposure students have to innovative technology, the more likely they are to consider the tech field when exploring careers.”
Looking Toward the Future
Josh Zook, Chief Technology Officer at Rocket Mortgage, spoke at the event and the importance of making cutting-edge technology accessible. “Generative AI represents the next phase in the democratization of technology, transforming the complex into the accessible. As this technology continues to evolve, it will be crucial for everyone—not just technologists—to be proficient in it,” said Zook.
“The key lies in equipping students with the tools they need to foster a mindset of curiosity and continuous learning,” Zook explained. “Encouraging experimentation as a learning method and teaching them to deconstruct complex challenges into manageable tasks will be critical for a future where lifelong learning and problem solving becomes core skills.”
Launched in 2016, GDYT has served as a workforce development program for youth in the Detroit community, connecting them with meaningful summer employment, internships, and job readiness training. The Rocket Community Fund has been honored to play a role in this vital initiative, aligning our goal to create new opportunities for Detroiters with GDYT’s commitment to building a skilled workforce and empowering young leaders.
As we celebrate the five-year milestone of this impactful partnership, we remain committed to continuing our support for GDYT and its mission. By continuing to collaborate, innovate, and engage with our community, we can pave the way for even more success in the years to come. As Zook said, “At Rocket, giving back and investing in our communities is deeply ingrained in our culture. We’re committed to building a better future for our youth, while also helping them develop highly marketable skills that will benefit both the community and companies like Rocket in the long term.”
