Last month, we celebrated an exciting milestone for the Make It Home program as many Detroit families received the deeds to their homes. This achievement represents more than just paperwork—it’s the transformation from renters at risk of displacement to empowered homeowners.
Since 2017, the collaborative efforts of the Rocket Community Fund, United Community Housing Coalition (UCHC), and the City of Detroit have helped over 1,600 Detroit families avoid displacement and achieve homeownership. Many participants were renters whose landlords failed to pay property taxes, putting them at risk of losing their homes through no fault of their own.
Make It Home leverages the City’s “right of refusal” to purchase tax-foreclosed properties before auction. UCHC then sells these homes to occupants through 0% interest land contracts. Last year, families paid an average of $6,500 to secure their homes.
The impact extends beyond homeownership—the program also provides critical repair assistance. In November 2024, the Rocket Community Fund committed $700,000 in new funding to support both incoming homeowners and ongoing repair needs.
As Laura Grannemann, Executive Director of the Rocket Community Fund, said: “We’re not just helping families stay in their homes, we’re empowering them with the resources to invest even more deeply into their communities.”
The Make It Home program continues to transform lives by empowering residents to achieve the dream of homeownership. We’re proud and excited to be a part of their journey!
